The filmmaker and media mogul revealed that Angie’s song “20 Dollars” from her 2001 album, Mahogany Soul, played a significant role in the creative process of his upcoming film, Straw.

Tyler Perry’s Emotional Tribute To Angie Stone

In a heartfelt post, Perry shared how deeply Angie’s music resonated with him:

When I write a movie, I usually choose an artist to listen to that helps me see the world I’m creating.

I’ve always loved Angie and her music, and there’s one song in particular that I couldn’t get out of my head while writing Straw.

I just talked to my team about reaching out to her to clear the song. It’s called ’20 Dollars.’

Listen to it—it’s so soulful and speaks to so many of our upbringings and struggles. She was preaching…

I hadn’t had a chance to tell her how it touched and moved me, and just like that—she’s gone.

I don’t know what’s going on with so many people leaving this planet, but I do know that death is a door we all will face one day.

And I pray that my life touches folks the way she touched so many.

When I think about artists like her—true artists—who are loved and adored by us but ignored by them—it makes me want to help us ALL RISE!

Thank you for reminding all the Black brothers that you love us!!
